Brewster’s 8th Graders Dive into Real-World STEM with Sea Perch Project
Brewster’s 8th Grade Creative Thinking and Problem-Based Learning classes recently embarked on an exciting real-world STEM project that culminated in a memorable study trip to the Wounded Warrior Battalion. This hands-on experience allowed students to engage deeply with the engineering design process by building Sea Perches, which are underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs).
Throughout the project, these amazing Bulldogs acquired valuable skills such as soldering circuit boards, drilling and cutting PVC pipes, waterproofing motors, and testing their completed circuits. The students' dedication and hard work were evident as they tackled each challenge with enthusiasm and creativity.
The culmination of their efforts was a visit to the Wounded Warrior Battalion, where students had the opportunity to showcase their Sea Perches and learn from the experiences of the battalion members. This interaction provided a unique perspective on the practical applications of their STEM skills and the importance of perseverance and innovation.
A special thank you goes out to our Education Technology Teacher, Mr. Woodul, for his guidance and support throughout the project. Additionally, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all members of the Wounded Warrior Battalion for their hospitality and inspiration.
As we reflect on this incredible journey, we are reminded of the motto, “Nothing less than your best!” This project not only equipped students with technical skills but also instilled a sense of pride and accomplishment that will stay with them for years to come.
